Jastalyn's Fishing Primer
You will need the following items to fish:
Preparing your fishing rod:
Fishing Line:
Lures:
It's time to fish!
OMG I Caught something!
Cooking and eating your fish:
Good luck!
- a fishing rod
- a spool of fishing line or wire
- a lure or worm
- a weight
Preparing your fishing rod:
- You can look ON your rod to see if it's currently strung with anything.
- If it's empty you'll want to add the items listed above.
- Add items to your fishing rod by putting them ON the rod.
Fishing Line:
- With a spool of fishing line in your hand, pull line.
- You will get a length of fishing line.
- Put your spool away and put the length of fishing line on your pole.
Lures:
- Your lure, or bait, will dictate whether or not you need a weight.
- Look at the lure to see where it is most effective, ie. Surface, middle, at the bottom, or in the depths.
- If your lure is more effective on the surface, then you do not need to add a weight to your rod.
- If it's more effective in the middle, then add a light weigh to your rod.
- If it's more effective on the bottom or at the depths, then add a heavy weight to your rod.
- If you don't have any luck using a lure that works on the surface, change to a lure that works in the depths or on the bottom and add a weight accordingly.
It's time to fish!
- Now that you have all three things, or two depending on your bait, on your rod, it's time to fish!
- Most rods have four actions; three of these are for casting; push, wave, and raise. Pull brings the bait in a little at a time.
- Each action will throw your bait out at different distances from the dock.
- Depending on how far you throw it will make a difference on how long it takes to reel in.
- Push Rod - You lean back and let the line of your maoral fishing rod go with a sharp *WHOOSH!*, the dirt-covered worm flying through the air before landing with a soft *plink* right off of the side of the dock.
- Wave Rod - You lean back and let the line of your maoral fishing rod go with a sharp *WHOOSH!*, the dirt-covered worm flying through the air before landing with a soft *plink* a good distance from the the dock.
- Raise Rod - You lean back and let the line of your maoral fishing rod go with a sharp *WHOOSH!*, the dirt-covered worm flying through the air before landing with a soft *plink* quite a large distance away from the the dock.
- Pull Rod (Without a fish on) - You take in some of the slack from your maoral fishing rod.
- Once your rod is cast into the pond you can sit and wait, or you can give it a PULL every now and then until you catch something.
OMG I Caught something!
- When a fish is on the hook, you'll feel your rod jerk. This is when you should give it a PULL!
- Pull Rod (With a fish on) - You tug sharply on your maoral fishing rod and it wavers frantically and makes sharp zigzag motions!
- Pull the rod until the fish comes out of the water, or your line snaps.
- In the latter case, you'll have to get some more line to put on your rod.
- You'll also have to replace your weight and lure if your line snaps.
- If your line doesn't snap, you've caught a fish! - You give your maoral fishing rod one final tug and the bluegill sunfish comes wriggling to the surface! Moving swiftly, you quickly unhook it from the line and take hold of it tightly.
- If your other hand is empty, the fish will land in your hand.
- If your other hand is not empty, it will land on the ground.
- You can weigh your fish (add a few pounds) and tell your fishing stories!
- Don't forget to look at the fish and admire its beauty. They are all colorful and unique!
- You can now cook and eat your fish, or drop it near the dock and hope it will make its way back into the water. It takes a while though, and it doesn't always make it. (The bluegill sunfish suddenly wriggles right off the dock and into the water!) You can also keep it in a rhimar-lined chest for later!
Cooking and eating your fish:
- Put away your rod and get out your fillet knife! (Or just a regular dagger will work)
- Use CUT my bass (type of fish) with my knife.
- The first slice will give you a few seconds of round time, but you aren't finished yet.
- Sometimes, you'll manage to destroy the poor fish when trying to cut it. It happens, just try again with the next one.
- Continue to cut your fish until you can't anymore. (Looks like that's about all you can slice for now.)
- Put your knife away and pick up your fish fillets.
- Most fishing ponds have a cooking fire next to it or nearby.
- Put bass in fire (or other type of fish), and it's cooked instantly!
- Eat it and share with your friends!
- Ranger companions love fresh fish! Share with your furry friends too!
- They will be impressed when you tell them you caught it and cooked it yourself. (Your friends, not the companions so much.)
- You can also store your caught fish in your rhimar-lined creel until a later time if you wish.
Good luck!
